This doesn't neccessarily mean that you should expect any bother as Portugal is, on the whole, a very liberal and welcoming place and Porto is not an exception.If you scratch the surface, you will find a decent and buzzing selection of <a href="https://www.travelgay.com/porto-gay-dance-clubs/">gay clubs</a>, <a href="https://www.travelgay.com/porto-gay-bars-clubs/">gay bars</a> and <a href="https://www.travelgay.com/porto-gay-saunas/">gay saunas</a>. Most of the gay venues are located in the area around Jardim da Cordoaria. The annual LGBT Pride parade in summer has become increasingly popular every year.&nbsp;<h2>Getting to Porto</h2>By planeThe Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO), located 11km from the city centre, is Portugal's third busiest airport and is a hub for flag carrier TAP and focus city for easyJet and Ryanair. There are Transatlantic connections as well as flights in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.The violet E line of the Metro (heading to Estádio do Dragão) will take you downton Porto. Tickets cost €1.85 and journey times to the city centre are around 25 minutes. Alternatively, change at Campanhã to access the other metro lines and long distance rail services.There are buses available from the airport but it's only really recommended to take the bus at night when the metro service isn't running. Night line 3M is an hourly service and leaves from the airport's bus station.Taxis cost in the region of €20-30 euros which can be hailed at the airport or be booked in advance. Be aware that large items of baggage will incure greater costs.By trainPorto has two main stations. Sao Bento is the city's central station and is a regional hub whereas Campanhã offers services further afield across the Iberian peninsula. Being in mainland Europe means that it is easy to transfer from larger hubs on the European rail network.By boatThe ultra-modern Porto Leixões Cruise Terminal welcomes passengers embarking from cruise ships and is connected to the city by metro. Douro River cruises are also very popular and many tourists take this scenic route into the city.&nbsp;<h2>Getting around Porto</h2>On footPorto's city centre is relatively small, so all the major sights are located close to each other. The city is, however, rather hilly, so if you plan to get around on foot, be well-prepared to do some serious walking.By public transportThe best way to save money on public transport is to purchase a rechargable Andante card for 60 cents. This card works on the metro, buses and Funincular dos Guindais. Once "charged", it can only be "recharged" for the zone that you have purchased travel in. Day passes cost €7.Porto has 6 colour-coded and alphabetical metro lines, with more lines expected to be constructed. Waiting times vary depending on the time of day and Fridays and Saturdays have special night services. Be wary of pickpockets at rush hour.Bus tickets start from €1.90 when bought on board and offer a better way of getting to specific destinations than the metro. The service is relatively frequent during the day, but at night look out for services marked with M which are less regular but should take you where you need to go.By taxiThere are taxi ranks readily available throughout the city, but the cost is higher than other modes of transport. Cheaper deals can be found by pre-ordering or using taxi apps. At busy times, Porto's roads can become quite congested.&nbsp;<h2>Where to Stay in Porto</h2>Porto has an excellent choice of hotels that offer a great base for sightseeing, shopping and gay nightlife. There are many different cellars you can visit to try it so do your research to find to make the most of your budget.Torre dos Clérigos (Cleric's Tower) - one of Porto's most iconic sights. The bell tower of this 18th Century church is a splendid example of Baroque architecture in the city.Livaria Lello - a charming old bookshop with an astonishing interior. The cafe inside is a great spot for a cup of coffee (or glass of port).Mercado do Bolhão - traditional food market selling everything from seafood to fresh fruit. There are a few restaurants situated here which are good options if you want to grab an inexpensive lunch.Palácio da Bolsa - the 19th Century stock exchange building is a stunning neo-classical building that took nearly 70 years to complete. It is just as impressive on the inside as it is on the outside.FC Porto - a tour of the football stadium offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of these European heavyweights. Why not try and catch them in action when they play a game at home?Fundação de Serralves - contemporary art museum with a beautiful garden to walk around. Perfect for souvenirs or quirky treats for yourself.&nbsp;<h2>When to Visit</h2>The Atlantic Ocean makes the city of Porto cooler than other cities on the same latitude like Barcelona. But summers here are warm and sunny, with temperatures reaching up to 40ºC in heat waves (usually in the 20's). Winters are generally cool but occasionally drop below 0ºC.Porto hosts a wide range of events throughout the year. Some of the more popular include NOS Primavera (the counterpart to Barcelona's hipster/indie music festival) in June, FantasPorto Film Festival in February, and the Porto Wine Festival in January.&nbsp;<h2>Visa</h2>Portugal is within the Schengen zone. Those who do not hold an EU passport or a valid <a href="https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/portugal-visa/">Schengen Visa</a> should check requirements with their own embassy.&nbsp;<h2>Money</h2>Portugal's official currency is the euro. Visitors will have no trouble exchanging cash and traveler's cheques. Post offices usually offer a better rate than banks and commercial money-changing shops, though the latter might be the only option for obscure currencies.ATM's are widely available. When withdrawing cash from an ATM, a charge will be added (usually around €2), so it's best to take out 100 or more at a time.

Same sex couples in Portugal were previously not allowed to adopt or foster children. Between 2013 and 2016 various bills were put forward and rejected by parliament.

The age of consent in Portugal is 14 years of age for both homosexual and heterosexual sex.

In Portugal, blood donations have rules regarding sexual behaviour but they are the same for homosexual and heterosexual people. While discrimination is illegal according to the Portuguese Constitution, discrimination is widely reported amongst the LGBTQ+ community and new legislation was discussed in 2021 to address this.

The ability for MSMs (men who have sex with men) to donate blood or tissue for organ transplants. A deferral period refers to a waiting time before a man can donate after having sex.

In Portugal, there are no laws restricting the discussion or promotion of LGBTQ+ topics.

Censorship or prohibition of discussing, promoting, or teaching LGBTQ+ topics in media, schools, and in the general public.

The law allows adults to change their legal gender based on self-detirmination without any requirements. Minors aged 16 and 17 must have parental consent and a professional psychological opinion.

Legal recognition of a change in gender by permitting a change on an individual's legal documentation.

Individuals in Portugal can legally change their gender and name on their birth certificate.

Until 2011, legal gender recognition was not provided in Portugal.

A bill that bans conversion therapy was passed by the parliament on December 21st, 2023. It was signed by the President a few weeks later, and took effect on March 1st, 2024.  

Legal status of conducting sexual orientation changing therapy ("ex-gay" therapy)

There is no legislation prohibiting conversion therapy in Portugal. 
 
In 2023, Portugal&#39;s parliament passed a bill that includes a ban on conversion therapy, amongst other measures, but this needs to be passed by the President of the Republic before it becomes law. 
 
In 2019, after an open letter by 250 psychologists to the the regulatory Ordem dos Psicólogos, the body affirmed that conversion therapy is malpractice and has no basis in science and is not justifiable.

From 2008 onwards, gender identity began to be included in anti-discrimination laws in different cases in Portugal.

In Portugal, there are no major or excessive restrictions on the ability of transgender people to transition medically.

Medical and psychological support designed to help individuals transition to the gender they identify with, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and surgeries.

The medical regulation board adopted a resolution to permit gender reassignment surgery for cases of gender dysphoria.

Homosexuality was decriminalised in Portugal in 1982.

Consensual sexual activity between individuals of the same sex.

With the adoption of a new penal code in 1886, Portugal criminalised same-sex conduct. For some of this period, there was varying formality in the criminalisation but throughout LGB people were persecuted and imprisoned.

In 1852 Portugal adopted a penal code based on the Napoleonic one France saw earlier in the 19th century and did not ban homosexuality.

In February 2019, Portugal passed a law prohibiting discrimination in housing against LGBTIQ+ people. The law lists sexual orientation as a protected characteristic and while gender identity isn’t explicitly listed, it is a protected characteristic constitutionally meaning that it could still be protected from such discrimination.

Non-consensual gender reassignment treatment and surgical intervention on intersex children have been prohibited by law since August 2018 under Article 5 of Law No. 38.

Medical interventions performed on intersex infants to alter their genital appearance to conform to typical male or female standards, often without the informed consent of the child who is too young to participate in the decision-making process.

In 2010, the XVIII Constitutional Government of Portugal approved a marriage equality bill, making it the eighth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage.

Marriage and marriage recognition between two people of the same biological sex and/or gender identity.

Transgender and non-binary people are now allowed to serve after executive order 318/202. Executive order 318/202, stipulates that “other endocrine dysfunctions, namely dysfunctions of the gonadal hormonal system, congenital or acquired and requiring permanent chronic hormone replacement therapy” are no longer grounds for excluding candidates.

The ability for homosexuals to serve in the military and be open about their sexuality.

Portugal is not one of the 22 countries that allows trans military service. 
 
Trans people aren&#39;t explicitly banned from joining the army, but due to discrimination and regulations that also apply to cis people, but more commonly affect trans people, they are unable to join.

Even though gender self-identification is possible in Portugal, non-binary identities are not yet legally recognized here.
