Playa Los Muertos - gay beach

Playa Los Muertos is the main gay beach in Puerto Vallarta – it's the most popular gay beach in Mexico! The dedicated gay section begins at the southern end of the beach, instantly recognizable by the Blue Chairs.

The gay section starts around the Blue Chairs Resort and extends southward past Mantamar Beach Club. Look for the cluster of rainbow flags, sun loungers in various colors (blue being the original, but now joined by green and orange options from different beachfront businesses), and a predominantly male crowd showing off swimwear that ranges from stylish to barely-there!

    The Vibe and Crowd

During peak season (December through April), the beach buzzes with energy as visitors from the US, Canada, and beyond escape winter for Mexico's sunshine. The crowd is diverse – you'll find everyone from 20-something party boys to silver-haired couples who've been coming for decades, with bears, twinks, muscle guys, and everyone in between represented.

Weekends are particularly lively, with Sunday being the unofficial "gay beach day" when the section fills to capacity. The atmosphere is incredibly friendly – it's completely normal to strike up conversations with neighboring sunbathers and, perhaps, strike up more than just conversation.

    The Blue Chairs Legacy

The Blue Chairs Resort holds a special place in Puerto Vallarta's gay history. While there are now more upscale options along the beach, this property pioneered the gay section back in the day, and its beachfront area remains a popular gathering spot. The chairs themselves may be weathered, but they're part of gay travel history!

    The Water Experience

Unlike some beaches in Mexico, Playa Los Muertos offers relatively calm, swimmable waters most days. The bay location provides some protection from major waves, though the shoreline can get a bit rough during certain weather conditions. The water is typically clear enough to spot colorful fish swimming around your feet.

The beach slopes gradually, making it accessible for wading and swimming. However, be aware that there can be a strong undertow at times, so pay attention to warning flags if they're posted.

    The Extended Gay Zone

While the Blue Chairs area is the historical center, the gay-popular section has expanded over the years. Heading south past Mantamar, you'll find Green Chairs and other beach clubs that also attract an LGBTQ+ crowd. As you move north from Blue Chairs, the beach becomes more mixed but still very gay-friendly.

    Nearby Gay Nightlife

One of Los Muertos' biggest advantages is its proximity to Puerto Vallarta's gay nightlife. After your beach day, you're just steps away from popular venues like:
