Foreigners not welcome - Corona Fearmongering

I attempted to go to Shelter tonight after a previously pleasant experience about a week ago. The front door worker wouldn't even let me take off my shoes. I tried to show him that I'm fully vaccinated but he wasnt willing to hear me out. He said: "Sorry, you are foreign. We have many complaints because our customer don't want to catch corona. I'm sorry please go." So I guess this is what life will be like moving forward. "Sorry no foreigners" exactly the same as what happened in itaewon 2 years ago when the first corona cases were reported in the gay bars. Be safe out there guys. I hope you have better luck than I did.

Lots of action but too dark to see

I went to shelter randomly because I got lost on the way to Equus and realized the two saunas are within walking distance. The door staff was helpful and explained how shoes lockers etc worked and then pointed me in the direction of the shower. It was really busy for a Sunday afternoon but I guess the 9pm curfew makes people come out earlier. There were so many sexy guys, tall, gym fit, muscular. I guess this is where all the gay PTs go. Everyone wears a mask and some are naked or wearing tight underwear. I had many men touch and fondle me but not in an uncomfortable way. Just to 'see what I'm packing' people were mostly doing stuff or just standing around watching. Eventually some guys started pairing off and then it was pretty much a free for all. One of the staff came to clean up used condoms and lube from the cabins but while he was there a guy took his fancy so he pulled the guy off the bottom and took him in the cabin then left like nothing happened. Lol. It's wild out here! I had a good experience. No one was rude or discriminating towards me which I was kinda worried about based on the other reviews. I had fun with two guys but no kissing because of masks and everyone is scared of corona. I like kissing so that was my only negative. Maybe go try for yourself and make up your own mind. If you don't like it go down a few blocks to EQUUS maybe you'll have better luck there.

    Pandemic update, no foreigner

Just today, I went here for a quick check of the place. I am a southeast Asian guy wearing a mask and puffer jacket as it is cold during the visit. The receptionist said that this place is restricted to Korean only, not sure whether I am not suitable for the crowd or it really is meant Korean exclusive.

    Hot Korean guys but...

Went on a Saturday night at around 11PM then it’s true that most of the guys there are muscular and hot. However, me being a foreigner and little bit muscular (Filipino), I haven’t had too much interaction with the locals since they seem to cling to local Koreans as well. When I tried to talk in English, they will tend to go away and look for another one. Cleanliness is a small issue though I was able to step on a used condom? Lol but I managed to clean my foot at the shower area. Hot crowd but they seem too patriotic for another meat LOL but it was an okay experience!

    Confirm

Im also a foreigner who has been to Shelter many times and can confirm this review, although I haven't been there in a few years. Foreigners should def be aware that the guys at shelter seem to be particularly Korean-oriented. Thats not to say I never saw action at Shelter, just that there were about just as many nights that I was totally ignored. The staff (usually the Japanese owner when I went) were generally helpful when condoms were needed which was a plus and the air quality is markedly better than Black and Equus.

    Hot Korean-On-Korean crowd, For Real..

Came here recently. I am a fit Westerner, here are my impressions.. I went on a Saturday night at around 10pm-midnight, a Monday night around 8pm-midnight and a Tuesday night around 8pm-midnight. I was impressed with how full it was even on Mon/Tue night which are usually 'off' night - at least 20-30 guys there. The crowd was mostly gym-fit Koreans, easily the hottest crowd I've seen in a sauna. (usually many out-of-shape guys, in my experience.) The good news for foreigners is, they seem to let them in now, and while I would have passed their 'inspection', They did not ask me to show my body, and there were a fewer fit guys there. so it didn't seem like they're all that strict. The bad news for foreigners is that the local Korean guys are mostly only into each other. And they hook up a LOT with each other. This not a place where people just stand around. (If anything the guys are overly pushy for immediate action..) If you are a foreigner, I'd recommend you come earlier, stay later, and lower your standards a bit if you want to hook up, and try not to get an attitude towards the aloof locals - it will spoil your mood and make you less attractive to whomever might be interested. I did notice that near the end of the night, there were quite a few guys, mostly Koreans, many quite hot, who were visibly frustrated that they could not hook up.. the mood got edgy then .. I would add that there is a prominent sign on the wall saying 'this is a no-barebacking club', but I had several guys reject me after I refused to bareback with them. Also, the club really is small and very dark, so it's hard to see people's faces, or who is hooking up with who, which is always part of the fun, IMO. And while a lot of Seoul saunas have no privacy at all, this one has small sleeping rooms with doors that you can close but cannot lock. Thee rooms and doors also have windows that you can look through, if you can see in the dark. so it's not completely private. Guys tend not to shine phone-lights here like they do at some other places either.. I don't know if this is by policy or not.

    Rome Boutique Hotel & Spa

Not sure if Rome Boutique Hotel has undergone a sudden change or not, but checking in (24 January, 2013) for a 3 night stay I was followed by a family with 2 young children. Definitely a surprise for a hotel promoting itself as 100% gay. The young woman that showed me to my room also advised that the mini-bar, previously marketed as free and included in the room rate was, in fact, not free. Electronic entry-key-card system and DVD player in every room? Not in my double deluxe room. When I inquired of the front desk, the same young lady that showed me my room, whether the hotel had just undergone management changes, she did not seem to know the answer. When I outright asked if this was a gay hotel, she smiled and said "No, not a gay hotel." I had to do a double take and make sure I was not at the wrong hotel, that by some freak of science had all of my check-in and personal information when I arrived. Nope. Same Rome Boutique Hotel that is marketed here, on a number of other gay accommodation hotel sites and in the local Thai GLBT publications such as Out, Max and Thai Puan. This type of bait and switch marketing taking advantage of GLBT travelers who wish to patronize GLBT businesses is shameful. If the hotel has changed it management, it should notify those already booked of such a change so that other arrangements can be made. Rome Boutique Hotel in Pattaya is NOT a gay hotel. Furthermore, the way the young woman somewhat giggled and looked away when asked the question, it has not even made this traveler feel it is even gay-friendly. I can only imagine what the balance of my paid-for visit will surprise me with.

    Way too small

Came here on a weekend night and it wasn't too bad, decent-looking crowd. I was one of two Westerners in the sauna, and the crowd were mostly 'Asian into Asian' which is fine.. The facilities are very limited, and the sauna is very, very small. In fact, it's the smallest sauna I've ever been to! The crowd is mostly guys from their mid 20's to late 40's - mostly jocks. I am a white guy 24, average height and weight, decent-looking but not a model. But this is Korea, what can I do? People are gonna like what they like. Who am I to judge?

My bf and I just visited, bad environment with average Korean guys. We have to show our body before check in but we didn’t see any hot body Korean inside. The good thing is all guys open their body for action. Sauna in Hong Kong is much better with really hot guys.

Went there on Sunday evening, the whole place is only filled with 4 or 5 people at most (normal crowd, not muscular at all as they claimed). Worst is the whole place is dirty and air stinks, can't imagine oneself can actually make out in a place like this. Foreigners pay double as usual.

Avoid even if you are fit

This place is a joke compared to what you can get in Japan. Totally agree with the other commentators on what they mentioned about no good looking people there. The location is bad because it is far away from Itaewon, the gay district of Seoul. Inside is too cramped and small, barely room to do any sort of action. It heavily reeks of smell and lacks of cleanliness. The corridors were littered with condoms, you can easily step on them since its so dimly lit. Quality of patrons are subpar average at best, not in good shape. In fact, recently there has been complaints from the patrons of Shelter about not enough restriction of foreigners, especially southeast Asians. So best to avoid this place all together. Couldn't speak Korean, was rejected immediately. Just as a saying goes, Korea is for Koreans.

I went there last week twice. One time with a friend and then by myself. Simple, friendly placed. I like that there was no pointless conversation as I have limited time. Massage (Julian) first time was nice, relaxing yet sensual. Second time (Arman) extremely professional and all I can say is that one of best therapist I meet in Bali. Prices are regular. Well if soemone looking for massage for 5 US good luck, i dont mind to pay 25 us and expect some quality. What is also advantage for me that this spa is located in easy accessible area in central Seminyak. Overall good massage, nice place. Will back with pleasure.

    Banana Spa

I read many reviews so I gave it a try. The experience was overall disappointing. Shower facilities outside the treatment room, no background music but noise from construction work outside, the treatment itself was rather poor, and not really of therapeutic use. I asked the therapist where he learned give a massage. The answer was that it was handed on, and that it´s a cultural and family thing.

    Ugly crowd

I dont know why, but when I came to this club, last week it was crowded but there really was no any good looking people at least not my type. Most of them were bears in their 40s and a few yonger guys but not good looking at all. And also more important than the crowd inside is the cleanliness of this place, to say it more correct absolutely lack of it.

    Good-looking crowd

Most of guys there were good-looking with nice athletic bodies. It was my first time when I visited such place. So can't compare with other places. In my opinion the place is little bit too dark so you can't really see their faces. So it turns out that I had fun with a guy who was quite elder than me. Guys there are quite picky if your body not in a good shape than you might need to find another place. Mine is not in a perfect condition so was rejected by a few guys. So I am going to work on it and will visit this place again hopefully without any rejection :). Btw I'm an Asian but not Korean. And thats good in my opinion that they filter guys that are mostly of my type of taste.

I went there today (Sat 10pm) and was told that the place is only for Koreans. I have a Chinese look so it seemed the staff could really tell Koreans and Chinese apart. I wasn't mad though as the place was very quiet from the look outside so I guessed I would not get any actions anyway.

    Unfriendly staff

I highly recommend not to go to the Shelter in case you are not fit enough in the eyes of the staff. I am a gym fit Chinese and spend one hours to search for this place. When I finally find it, the barking dog at the gate say that this cruising club only welcome slim and muscular guy. I got insulted and see this guy actually not fit. Anyway, i highly recommend not to visit this club as many better club in the world.

    Foreigners welcome

Visited Shelter on Saturday early morning 3-4AM. The address is 33-3 Sinbanpo-ro 47-gil, this will help you find the place. It took me quite a while to find the correct alley and identify the building with the Chinese characters '安全'. There are signs of 'Shelter' outside the building. Cash only, entrance fee for foreigner is KRW 13000. They do welcome foreigners as they even put up English notice to indicate the entrance fees specifically for foreign visitors. I myself don't speak any Korean at all. The place is much smaller than expected. Only one floor and rather limited space. The cubicles are small too, mostly just for one person to lie down. Well the crowd was decent, young and athletic, but I would have expected more guys since it was Friday midnight. The place isn't that clean or well-maintained, but given the small and compact area it's intimate enough. Not much space for action since cubicles are small and mostly occupied by people who are sleeping over. Since I have not visited other saunas and based on reviews this one seems to have the best quality of guys, I cannot make fair comparison. I would say my experience was alright, not exceptional.

    nice place

I am from Singapore. Went there at night (New year eve 2013) and I got lost! I gave up and went back to my hotel. Went there again the next day, rely totally on my cellphone and this time I went in the daytime. It was in shop house after the BNB hotel. The place was poorly lit - no wonder I didn't see anything at night! They should put up a big poster sign or something. I'm one of the first few guys there. The facilities limited and pretty dull. Hung around for quite awhile. Still not a soul caught my attention. Mostly not attractive or too flamboyant for my liking. Until, I decided to go the jacuzzi for the last time after 3 times. A fine Chinese Indonesian man. Probably shy and didn't make eye contact with me sat opposite me. I thought he's not interested. I didn't make a move. Went up smoke. He's there. Sat beside him. We stare for a while and look away. We both scary cats I assume. Until he went to the dark room. I assume he's waiting. He did and grab me and when into one of the cabin. Don't forget to lock! If you don't want to see others looking at you! I have to shoosh them out. Because of that. I love this place! haha Its a pity I'm rushing back home. Didn't manage to get his Facebook or anything. Damn! Best experience.

Im foreigner but looks like Korean and speak Korean. So i don't have any restriction to get in any cruise club or sauna. But I tell you on thing that Shelter is the best if you are searching for fun compared to the others. I don't really care about the size but I care about who is coming to this place. Nice, good, hot, muscle body all around the place. It's not that clean, but i am not looking for a place like hotel to stay anyway. I got some action.

    Passable

I was hesitating to come because the reviews here but i tried anyway. Im a South east Asian guy fairly in shape. I went on a friday around 4:30.i Was charged 13.w. The place is too dark, small but felt ok clean and didn't smell bad. I was so glad there's actually a place without the touchy old men. Im not sure but i think 90% were local koreans which was nice. I had fun with a few. But most of them prefer their own. Some guys left me as soon as they realize im not a Korean as I don't speak it. A bit racist but nah, to each is own. I didn't mind as i do the same sometimes. Not cool, but you are there to please yourself not them. So overall its alright. Its possible that I come back.

Hard to find and poorly maintained

This place is really hard to find. It is at the entrance of the side lane, on the left of the road that Travelgayasia mentioned in the direction. Having been to Taipei, Hong Kong, Bangkok and European saunas, I must tell you to keep your expectations of the service, facilities and cleanliness very low. The place is poorly maintained and really small. The doors have window to them and you would be watched while having action. The cubicles are mostly small and hard to use if you are in threesome. The guys are young and very hot, but most are waiting for someone to initiate, which I did. But the quality of men alone could not save this place, it is really quite a hideous setting.

    Very Picky Crowd

I live in Seoul and have been here a couple of times. I am a slim foreign (Caucasian) guy. I have been to many gay saunas in Seoul but nowhere were the guys so picky as this one. They are very set on what type they want and aren't polite about rejecting either. The last time I tried to approach a local guy here, he literally made a gagging sound as he pushed me away. The local guys would also not accept other foreign Asian guys with very good physiques as I saw. Some of the 30+ year old guys there are more open to non-Korean, non-ripped guys. It's a gamble. Unless you have a great body and are Korean, I don't recommend trying your luck at Shelter. The owner/manager was very friendly though.
