Southern Decadence, often dubbed the "Gay Mardi Gras," is one of the most vibrant and eagerly awaited LGBTQ+ festivals in New Orleans. Celebrated over Labor Day weekend, this event draws thousands of revelers from across the globe to the heart of the French Quarter. What started as a small gathering in 1972 has now blossomed into an epic party.
What happens at Southern Decadence 2025?
Southern Decadence kicks off with a series of opening events that set the festive tone for the weekend. The festivities typically begin on the Thursday before Labor Day with the official opening ceremonies, featuring grand marshal introductions and a street party at the Golden Lantern, the festival's birthplace. This is followed by numerous parties and events at various venues throughout the French Quarter. The 2025 dates are yet to be confirmed.
The highlight is the Sunday parade, starting at 2 PM from the Golden Lantern on Royal Street. The parade route takes revelers through the French Quarter, showcasing extravagant costumes, themed floats, and music.
