The Metropolitan Community Church of New York (MCCNY) was founded in 1972 as part of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC), a global denomination established in 1968 to serve LGBTQ+ Christians at a time when most religious institutions rejected them. Under the leadership of Rev. Pat Bumgardner, the church expanded its mission beyond worship, engaging in social justice initiatives, including AIDS outreach, homelessness support, and LGBTQ+ rights activism.
